Call (301) 368-8305 with your door type, both temperatures, what the ice maker or dispenser is doing, whether a drawer closes fully, and your area or ZIP code.
Potomac Refrigerator Pros repairs refrigerators of every door layout by phone only, Monday to Sunday, 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Call (301) 368-8305 and name your door type first: French door, side-by-side, top-freezer, or bottom-freezer. The layout changes where cold air travels, where ice and water sit, and which doors and seals have to close. A written estimate comes before work starts — no form, no email booking.

A refrigerator is not one machine with four badges on it. The door layout decides the shape of the cabinet, the path cold air takes, where the ice maker and water line live, and which doors, drawers, and seals must close for the box to hold temperature. Naming the layout on the call tells the technician which of those four arrangements to expect before arriving.
This page covers layout only: how each configuration is built, how air moves through it, where ice and water sit, and what is awkward to reach or seal on that shape. Fault troubleshooting is not repeated here. If your fridge has a fault, go straight to its own page: Not Cooling, Freezer Not Freezing, Ice Maker, Water Dispenser, Leak, Noise and Fan Motor, Freezing Food, Defrost System, Control Board and Thermostat, Door Seal, Compressor and Sealed System, and Not Turning On. Each fault page covers diagnosis for every door type it affects.
Layout. Two doors side by side open onto a single full-width fridge section, with a freezer drawer below. The wide fridge opening takes broad shelves and full-width crisper drawers, and the freezer is a pull-out drawer rather than a door.
Airflow path. Many French-door models use dual evaporators, one for the fridge section and one for the freezer, so each section is cooled on its own circuit rather than sharing one stream of cold air between columns. On models without dual evaporators, air still has to serve a wide fridge cavity and a separate drawer below it.
Ice and water location. The ice maker sits in the fridge door, so ice is made and dispensed from the door itself, and the water line runs to that door. The door is where humid room air reaches the ice maker first.
Access problems. Both wide doors need swing clearance on their own side, and both long door seals must close fully for the wide fridge opening to hold temperature. The freezer drawer below needs pull-out room, and its seal and slides are a separate closure from the two doors above.
Faults on this layout: Ice Maker Repair, Door Seal Replacement, Defrost System Repair, and Leak Repair.
Layout. Two tall, narrow columns stand side by side: fridge on one side, freezer on the other, each full height. The narrow doors suit tight kitchens where a wide door cannot swing open.
Airflow path. Cold air moves between the two columns through an air damper, so the fridge column depends on air crossing from the freezer column. A damper, fan, or defrost fault therefore shows up as one warm column first, while the other stays cold.
Ice and water location. The dispenser and ice maker sit in one door, so ice and water come through the door of a single column, and the water line and filter serve that door.
Access problems. Each column is narrow, so wide items do not fit across either side, and both columns run floor to ceiling, so low items in either column mean bending down. Both door seals, one per column, must close for either side to hold temperature.
Faults on this layout: Ice Maker Repair, Water Dispenser Repair, and Noise and Fan Motor Repair.
Layout. The freezer compartment sits on top and the fridge section below it, behind two separate doors. This is the simplest layout of the four, with no drawer and no through-door dispenser on the standard form.
Airflow path. Cold air moves from the freezer section down into the fridge section below, so the fridge depends on air travelling between the two stacked sections. When that movement stops, one section warms while the other stays cold.
Ice and water location. Ice is stored in the top freezer section itself, not in a door, and there is no through-door dispenser or in-door ice maker to trace on the standard layout.
Access problems. The freezer is overhead, so reaching it means reaching up, while the fridge section sits lower. Each door, freezer and fridge, has its own seal, and either seal leaking lets humid air into its own section.
Faults on this layout: Freezer Not Freezing Repair, Door Seal Replacement, and Defrost System Repair.
Layout. The fridge section sits on top at eye level, and the freezer is a pull-out drawer below it. Everyday fridge items are reached without bending, while frozen food lives in the drawer underneath.
Airflow path. Cold air moves from the freezer drawer section up into the fridge section above, so the fridge depends on air travelling between the stacked sections, drawer below and cabinet above.
Ice and water location. Ice storage sits in the freezer drawer below, not in a door, and the standard layout has no through-door dispenser.
Access problems. The drawer needs pull-out clearance in front of the unit and must close fully: it has its own seal and slides, separate from the fridge door above, and anything blocking closure leaves the drawer open to humid air.
Faults on this layout: Freezer Not Freezing Repair, Door Seal Replacement, and Defrost System Repair.

Diagnose on site: temperatures, voltage, thermostat, board, fans, damper, defrost parts, coils, airflow, drain, dispenser, ice maker, drawer seal and slides, and door seals are tested for your layout. The failed part is named, not guessed.
Written estimate before work: plain-language diagnosis and estimate first, and you decide. Sealed-system failure on an old unit, with the replacement comparison, comes before any work.
Repair and test: the failed part is replaced, coils are cleaned, and the drain is cleared where needed. Temperatures are checked again — fridge at or below 40°F, freezer at 0°F — before the visit ends.
After: how to keep vents clear, check seals and drawer closure, and keep coils accessible. No “fixed for life” promise, and no warranty term — warranty terms are unconfirmed and must come from the partner.
No Potomac-specific repair price dataset exists, and none is invented here. Market figures, not a quote, and not a Potomac price. Your written estimate is the only price that counts.
$138–$350 typical, most around $220.

If repair costs more than about half a comparable new unit, replacement is usually favoured; if far less, repair usually wins. Lifespans (Fridge.com analysis of DOE/AHAM data) are about 12 years for a French-door unit, about 12 years for a side-by-side unit, about 14 years for a top-freezer, and about 13 years for a bottom-freezer — guides, not guarantees. The exception: a repair buying two or three more years on a unit that fits its alcove or tight kitchen perfectly can beat a swap needing joinery.

Straight answers about fridge door layouts in Potomac, MD — diagnosis first, written estimate before work.
Look at how the doors open. Two doors side by side over one wide fridge section, with a drawer underneath, is a French-door model. Two tall doors side by side, fridge on one side and freezer on the other, is a side-by-side. A freezer door on top with the fridge below is a top-freezer, and a fridge door on top with a pull-out freezer drawer below is a bottom-freezer. If you are unsure, describe the doors on the call and the technician will place it.
Yes, because the path is different on each layout. On a side-by-side, air crosses between the two columns through a damper. On stacked top-freezer and bottom-freezer layouts, air travels between the freezer section and the fridge section above or below it. On many French-door models, each section has its own evaporator, so the two sections are cooled separately. The layout therefore changes which parts the technician checks first, but the fault itself still has its own page: see Not Cooling or Freezer Not Freezing.
On a French-door model, the ice maker sits in the fridge door, and on a side-by-side, the dispenser and ice maker sit in one door. On top-freezer and bottom-freezer layouts, ice is stored in the freezer section or freezer drawer itself, and the standard layout has no through-door dispenser. So a door ice maker is a French-door or side-by-side feature, while a drawer or compartment ice store belongs to the stacked layouts.
A side-by-side, because its two narrow doors need less swing room than the two wide doors of a French-door model. That is the layout’s main fitting advantage, and it is why side-by-side models are often chosen where a wide door cannot open fully. A top-freezer or bottom-freezer needs room for one full-width door plus, on a bottom-freezer, pull-out room for the drawer.
Because the seals sit in different places. A French-door model has two long seals on the wide fridge opening plus a drawer seal below, so a leak can come from either door or the drawer. A side-by-side has one seal per column, so a leak on one side affects that column first. The seal count and position follow the layout, which is why the call always starts with the door type.
Usually yes, and it is often the sensible choice: a replacement in the same layout fits the same alcove, the same door swing, and the same drawer clearance. A repair buying two or three more years on a unit that fits perfectly can also beat a swap needing joinery. Under the 50% rule, compare the written repair estimate with a comparable new unit in the same layout, including delivery and installation, before deciding.
Name the layout first: French door, side-by-side, top-freezer, or bottom-freezer. Then give both temperatures, what the ice maker or dispenser is doing, whether a drawer closes fully, and your area or ZIP code. Those five facts let the technician arrive expecting the right cabinet shape, airflow path, and seal arrangement.
